Developing Semantic Mapping Materials

M Enam Ull Hassan - Warren Central High School

Semantic mapping, as a pedagogical approach, offers a visual and interconnected representation of the relationships between words, their meanings, and grammatical forms. This approach fosters profound and meaningful engagement with new vocabulary, improving retention and versatile word application across various contexts. For the development of vocabulary teaching material, ten academic words were selected from The Academic Word List (AWL) developed by Coxhead (2000). The learner population comprises 10 ESL students enrolled in an Intensive English Institute, signifying their focus on acquiring English language skills for academic purposes.

Advocacy Through Score Reports

Lynn Stallings & Lilunnaber - Ball State University

In this session, we examine the cognitive and linguistic load required of families when needing to interpret multiple distinct score reports to understand their students’ progress. We invite an audience-based discussion about how score reports can interfere with, or support, the very advocacy efforts they are intended to achieve.
